David Whiscombe

In my earliest years, the standard rate of Income Tax was eight shillings and sixpence in the pound, with Surtax levied at ten shillings in the pound on incomes in excess of the astronomically aspirational figure of £15,000 per annum.
However, such things did not disturb the even tenor of my life until in 1976 I joined the former Inland Revenue as a fast-track direct entry Tax Inspector.  After periods as District Inspector and subsequently Senior Tutor training Tax Inspectors I jumped ship to join a niche tax consultancy practice as an Associate Director in 1987.

From 1991 until 2018 I was senior (and initially only) tax partner with what grew to be a mid-tier firm of accountants, developing the tax practice from nothing  to a team of tax specialists widely respected in the industry.  Now, in 'semi-retirement' I continue to provide support to the firm on an ad hoc basis as a consultant alongside the contentious tax work that I undertake through  David Whiscombe LLP.

I'm a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (awarded in 2007 for a thesis on corporate reorganisations), I hold a post-graduate diploma in law with distinction and I have been admitted to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn (though it should be clearly understood that I do not practise as a barrister).

As well as advising on contentious tax matters, I write for the professional press on a broad range of tax issues; these include email briefings ghost-written for my previous firm and a widely-respected textbook (now online commentary) on the taxation of partnerships and LLPs.

My work mainly involves tax issues arising from owner-managed trading and investment businesses and their proprietors, encompassing Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, PAYE/NIC, and Corporation Tax, with a particular expertise in the area of partnerships.
